ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: No formal entry requirement GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE To provide the students an introduction to Mandarin and Chinese culture. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: - To equip the students a basic understanding of Mandarin - To make the students aware of essential Chinese culture - To enable the students to conduct basic conversations and write some core Chinese characters. LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Have a good understanding of Chinese characters, pinyin and tone and be able to pronounce Chinese characters; 2. Greet people in different situations; introduce themselves, their families and their country; 3. Conduct conversations at different situations such as asking directions, shopping, ordering food etc. 4. Understand strokes in Chinese characters write and use some core characters, numbers and dates. GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE: Role plays and games will be used through out the course. DVD and tapes will be used to show authentic scenarios to aid the learning. More practical aspects will include tasting Chinese teas and use of chopsticks etc. MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: Course materials will include practice sheets from different textbooks such as "Happy Chinese" (New edition), "Communicate in Chinese", "New Practical Chinese" etc., and DVD and tapes bought from China. Special sheets for practising Chinese writing will be provided. Students will be required by provide their own materials HOWEVER students may wish to wait until the class commences to get information/advice from tutor before purchasing costly materials e.g. Text Books, until they confirm the viability of the class.
