Please note there is only on-street parking at this venue. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Little or no prior knowledge needed. An interest in watching and discussing film required. GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE An entertaining and interactive exploration of the horror film genre and how it reveals our subconscious fears and social concerns. Topics include: the changing face of the monster; the family in horror films; SF/Horror from the 1950s; feminism and slasher movies. Lots of screenings and discussion. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course students will: - be aware of the literary and artistic influences on the development of the horror film - have an understanding of the common features of the horror film in general and in particular sub-genres, eg plots, characters, structure, film techniques - be able to analyse a film in terms of its: 1) generic features 2) portrayal of particular social fears - be able to understand and discuss the changes in the genre during the last 100 years. GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE Lectures, film screenings and group discussion. Course Contents: 1. Introduction: The appeal of horror; literary and artistic influences; early horror films; German Expressionist cinema. 2. The Shadows Take Shape: The coming of sound; Universal Pictures; establishment of the horror genre. 3. They Are Coming! World War II and after; psychological horror; science fiction & horror. 4. Paranoic! Val Lewton and psychological horror 5. The Dead: Horror re-born; Hammer Films; the British horror film. 6. Look Behind You: The rise of the terror film. Slashers; the influence of Psycho. 7.The Satanic Screen: The changing role of the family in horror movies; Good vs Evil; censorship. 8. The Monster Within: Body horror; the transformational monster; Gender representation in the horror film. 9. The Shape of the Unknown: The changing face of the monster; post-modern horror films; the future of horror. 10. Future shock: Post-modern horror films; the future of horror.
