Class Description

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Students should preferably have completed Ulpan units 1-24 or equivalent Beginners course.
GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE: Students to learn to speak Gaelic with confidence - suitable for those who need Gaelic for work, for parents of children in Gaelic education, college and university students, employers wishing to provide Gaelic in-house, and those simply wanting to enjoy the fun of speaking Gaelic! Emphasis throughout on speaking (Gaelic in use), reinforced with reading and writing. LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of the course students will be able to:- 1. Greet people in formal and informal situations. 2. Talk about themselves and their family. 3. Describe events past, present and future. 4. Give basic descriptions, use numbers, tell the time, know the days of the week. 5. Understand simple instructions and questions and act or reply appropriately. 6. Students' knowledge and awareness of Gaelic culture will have increased. NOTE: Students are expected to carry out some preparation or revision each week (homework).
GENERAL APPROACH TO THE COURSE (Methods etc): The course uses ULPAN methods and material developed from the successful Welsh WLPAN system of language teaching. Key phrases are drilled (hear, repeat, read, recall) and then followed by games to reinforce phrases. Conversation (student to student and student to tutor) is actively encouraged. A busy but fun filled course! MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS AND ADDITIONAL COST Handouts are provided, so no separate textbooks are required. However, a £50 ULPAN access/registration fee is required from those students not already registered with ULPAN. (This entitles the student access to material for 72 units of ULPAN.) This will be discussed with the student in the class by the tutor.
