ENTRY REQUIREMENT: No. Some familiarity with computers/the internet is helpful but not essential. GENERAL AIM OF THE COURSE: This 10 week course focuses on the basic sources and methods for tracing descent from one's Irish and Scots-Irish ancestors, as well as for learning more about them, the lives they led, and the communities in which they lived. LEARNING OUTCOMES: By the end of the course students will have receiveD practical information and advice to assist them in identifying, locating and applying a variety of sources to a 'hands-on' exploration of their families' past: good and bad; on both male and female lines, and across class boundaries in both the Republic of Ireland (Eire) and Northern Ireland. METHODS & APPROACHES TO TEACHING THE COURSE: Course presentations are illustrated with slides and handouts and cover sources originating in all of the 32 counties of Ireland from printed and manuscript material, as well as from transcripts, microfilm, microfiche, CDs and the internet. Also featured are techniques for tracing Scots-Irish ancestors from Ulster back to Scotland. Each of the following topics will identify sources, indicate where to find them, and demonstrate how they can be used to learn more about and to document one's ancestors' activities. Names, clans, septs, tartans, and coats of arms, Topography (gazetteers, maps and plans), Statutory (civil) records of births, marriages and deaths, Church records (all major denominations), Census records, Census substitutes: directories, tithe applotment books, tax and valuation rolls, Military records (including muster rolls and regimental histories), Testamentary (probate) records (including wills and administrations), Land records (including surveys, patent rolls and deeds), Monumental inscriptions and cemetery records, Newspapers and periodical, Estate papers (including rent and lease rolls), Local sources (libraries, archives, museums, family history societies, heritage centres), nternet/world wide web MATERIALS REQUIRED BY STUDENTS: Notebook, pen/pencil
